Magical Moments of Discovery...

About our program

The Edgewood House School was founded to provide children, teachers and families a child-centered, extended day preschool program in an intimate small group environment. We operate under a family child care license through the Department of Social Services Community Care Licensing.  We are a community of teachers, parents and children; a concentrated effort to bring together all the best practices for play based learning the early childhood field has to offer. Our indoor and outdoor environments are equally accessible throughout our program day. The primary goal for our preschool program is to provide a philosophically balanced approach to early childhood education, teaching and parenting. We present learning concepts through hands-on exploration of the world around us; introducing children to academic concepts within a non-competitive, developmentally appropriate environment. The afternoon program provides a family style school-age program with plenty of time for play, help with homework and friendship.

Edgewood House Core Values

Respecting and recognizing each individual
Mutual respect, honesty and personal responsibility are key elements as we work to build a community of learners.

Constructivist approach
Attention to each child acknowledges the uniqueness and developmental level of that individual; building upon strengths to progress to the next stage of maturation.

Meaningful, relevant curriculum
A "training ground for real life"; EHS encourages each child to become a self-directed, thinking, lifetime learner through developing their own interests.

Interdisciplinary Learning
Learning focuses on the whole child: social, emotional, physical, sensory and academic development are of equal importance. We strive to provide learning through multiple modalities; capitalizing on each child's uniquesness. Exploration indoors and outdoors are equally important.

Parent-teacher partnership
Parents and teachers are partners who work together to foster optimal development of all children in our community. We treat everyone's growth and development with sensitivity and confidentiality.

Growth and assessment
The process of observation and documentation is ongoing, designed to recognize individual growth and change. Portfolios documenting development are integral to our process of assessment.

Community building and family style learning
Building a community of learners, who share strengths, accept support and communicate ideas without competition is a primary focus. Our mixed age grouping encourages mentoring, modeling, caring, independence and empathy; allowing siblings and different age friends to attend and grow together.
